Purified Water Analysis “Purified Water” used in the pharmaceutical industry is essential in the manufacture of proprietary medicines or as a process intermediate. Its chief attribute is that minerals have been removed, normally by ion exchange treatment; the water is usually sterilised to prevent biofilm formation. Purified water processes must be regularly monitored for compliance with stringent chemical and microbiological standards. “Highly Purified Water” and “Water for Injections” represent higher grades of purity, the latter being made by distillation, with the distillate sealed in containers that are then heat sterilised. Such waters are routinely tested for the presence of endotoxins (toxins which originate from the cell walls of certain bacteria and which give rise to fevers if they enter the bloodstream).
