Introduction and background
Disinfectant testing regimes and guidelines have been drawn up
by CEN/TC 216: the tests selected should be chosen as appropriate
for the intended field and method of application.
The testing regime is structured in three phases as follows:
| Phase 1: |
suspension tests to assess the basic
activity of the product |
| Phase 2 step 1: |
Suspension tests under laboratory
conditions representative of practical use: |
| Phase 2 step 2: |
Other laboratory tests, eg, handwash,
handrub and surface tests simulating practical conditions |
| Phase 3: |
Field tests under practical conditions |
We advise which tests are suitable for a particular application. The
list of methods below is not exhaustive and we may be able to
provide analysis using other BSEN methods, not listed below.
BSEN 1040 : 1997 Chemical
disinfectants and antiseptics – Basic
Bactericidal activity –
Test methods and requirements (Phase 1)

disinfectants and antiseptics – Quantitative
suspension test for the evaluation of bactericidal activity of
chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial,
domestic and institutional areas – Test method and requirements
(Phase 2 step 1)
BSEN 1650:1997 Chemical

suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal activity of chemical
disinfectants and antiseptics used in food, industrial, domestic
and institutional areas – Test method and requirements (Phase
2 step 1)

disinfectants and antiseptics – Quantitative
suspension test for the evaluation of fungicidal activity of chemical
disinfectants and antiseptics used in veterinary field – Test
method and requirements (Phase 2 step 1)

disinfectants and antiseptics – Quantitative
non-porous surface test for the evaluation of bactericidal and/or
fungicidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in food, industrial,
domestic and institutional areas – Test method and requirements without
mechanical action (Phase 2 step 2)
